CIEL - Requirements for Admission

Requirements for Admission

Prior to being admitted into most American universities, international students from non-English speaking countries must demonstrate English language proficiency through a standardized TOEFL Exam Score. International students who are not proficient in English, but can recognize and understand the English alphabet system, may receive provisional acceptance into Dillard University’s CIEL Program provided they can show proof of a high school diploma, transcripts and other important documents that support the application process. CIEL will issue a Form I-20 (valid for a 12-month stay) to eligible international students. Students must pay the SEVIS fee and provide CIEL with an official receipt from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The following documentation is necessary for admission:

Placement, Evaluation, and Certificates

Prior to starting the Center for Intensive English Language (CIEL) Program, all incoming students are required to take a placement test. The placement test determines which of the six levels (offered) a student will be placed into prior to the start of course sessions. Achievement is measured based on examination scores, homework, lab work, classroom performance, portfolios, and attendance. Student-teacher conferences and mid-term reports assist in evaluating the progress of students.

Upon successful completion of all requirements for a session, students receive a Certificate of Achievement. Students who finish Level 6 receive a Certificate of Program Completion, along with a final report/transcript.

Through our provisional admission program, students who have completed all six levels of CIEL can apply for full admission into Dillard University. They are not required to take the TOEFL Exam. Those who wish to exit the CIEL Program early, however, must take the TOEFL Exam and receive a successful score of 79 or higher on the Internet Based Test (iBT) to be admitted into the university’s academic programs.
