Social Sciences - Political Science

scales justiceA major in political science provides ideal basic pre-professional training for students interested in a wide variety of careers including teaching, law, international relations, public affairs, civil service, and technical research. Students are exposed to the latest trends and research methods in the field.

Program Clubs & Organization

Political Science Club University - focuses on leadership potential of its members: organizing, mobilizing, planning session in policy on national and international issues. Forums, research and simulations.

African World Network Organization Inc. - Dillard chapter promotes African - American partnership; cultural relations, intellectual African American based issues, stimulating African focus ambassadorial careers for students. Promoting student involvement in practical nonprofit leadership as an educational leadership objective and African related travel-experience.

National Political Science Honor Society - promoting academically excelling political leaders.

Mock Trial and Pre-Law Organizations - Preparing students who are future lawyers and friends of the court: Amicus curia.

 Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • Gain a general knowledge of the structures, powers and procedures of United States federal and state governments and foreign governments
  • Be able to think critically and analytically about contemporary political questions
  • Be able to apply knowledge and skills to solve contemporary social problems 

Requirements for Major in Political Science 
  •  41 hours of university core courses
  • Minimum 36 hours of political science required course
  • 12 hours political science electives
  • Community Service requirement
  • Completion of writing proficiency exam
  • Students must repeat any course in the major in which a "C" or better is not earned
