DU Partners With Recovery School District for Teacher Training Program PDF Print E-mail

Dillard University has partnered with the Louisiana Recovery School District to develop an innovative new teacher training program that they believe will revolutionize teacher education in New Orleans and, perhaps, serve as a model for programs across the country.

“This is the most creative partnership we have ever entered,” said Dillard University President Marvalene Hughes. “It offers enormous and unlimited opportunities to the student population at Dillard.”

On August 17, Dillard University Provost David Taylor revealed new details of the program. Dillard sophomores, juniors and seniors of any major with a GPA above 3.00 will be invited to participate in the program, which involves student teaching and paid internships. After graduating, interested students will partake in an intensive six-week training program that will certify them to teach in the Recovery School District.

“It’s another way of trying to entice, particularly, students of color to think about education as a career option by giving them early exposure,” Taylor said.

Dr. Joyce Roche, chair of the Dillard University board of trustees, and Dr. Paul Vallas, superintendent of the Recovery School District, first announced the initiative in April.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Dillard in this unprecedented program,” Vallas said. “It will not only allow us to bolster our already strong alternative pathways for teachers, but will also bring greater diversity to our efforts, which is always important in a district such as ours."

The following letter from President Marvalene Hughes to the school community addresses Dillard's reaffirmation at the hands of its accrediting body:

I am pleased to announce that on June 30, 2010, we received notification of Dillard University’s ten-year reaffirmation from our accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC).

We are deeply grateful to each of you for your support, and to our entire campus community, who worked tirelessly on the development of our compliance documents and our Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

Although an enormous amount of hard work, the reaffirmation process was positive for Dillard University, as it helped to clarify and reaffirm our mission and strategic directions for the university. We are all very pleased with this outcome.

Sincerely,

DrHughesSignature

Dillard University and LSU Health Sciences Center have partnered to establish a Minority Health Disparities Research Center on the Dillard campus, the universities announced on June 10. The center will be funded by a $6.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

"We have earned a huge award, an award that is very special because it addresses the health disparity issues that are so important to us," said Dillard University President Dr. Marvalene Hughes.

The Minority Health Disparities Research Center will focus on medical issues such as prostate cancer, cervical cancer, obesity and asthma that afflict minority and disadvantaged populations disproportionately.

Dr. John Ruffin, director of the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities, traveled from Washington, D.C. to award the grant.
