Dillard Theatre Students Recognized by Actor Nicoye Banks PDF Print E-mail

nicoye_banksDillard Theatre students are generating lots of buzz and it's not just on the DU campus. The current production of "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf" has gotten plenty of attention and praise from viewers. The Mayor's Office of Cultural Economy and Film New Orleans mentioned the production and its crew in an announcement about an exciting opportunity for Dillard Theatre students to receive special scholarships awarded by New Orleans actor Nicoye Banks' "It Takes Heart" Foundation.

Banks, a New Orleanian, stars in the soon-to-be released film "Woman Thou Art Loosed! On the 7th Day", and will partner with Encore Event Planning to create a special ceremony to present students with the theatre arts scholarships.

"We want people to be able to reach their dreams," says Encore Event Planning partner Essence Harris.

For Harris and her partner, touching the lives of students from New Orleans is extremely important. That sentiment is also shared by Banks, who is focusing on Dillard University students, despite being a former Southern University student. Banks remembers how many people helped him on his way up and wants to be able to provide the same opportunities for others.

Banks has been on the Dillard campus for a rehearsal of "For Colored Girls..." and has spoken to students in communications, as well as given an interview with WDUB radio.

On April 5, 2012 Banks will be part of a stellar movie premiere at the AMC Theatre in Clearview Palace 12. Encore Event Planning has organized the event which will include a media-infused red carpet arrival and VIP reception. Tickets are available exclusively online here.

Champions_Program_1The American Dream is alive and well, and Dillard University College of Business will pay homage to it as it honors local entrepreneurs Paul Flower and Dorothy Perrault at the second annual Champions of the American Dream event on Thursday, March 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the Georges Auditorium of the Professional Schools and Sciences Building. Attendance is free and open to the public.

Flower is the president and C.E.O. of Woodward Design+Build, the New Orleans architecture firm that helped build Dillard's Professional Schools and Sciences Building. Perrault, a Dillard alumna from the class of 1960, owns Perrault Kiddy Kollege, a local pre-school program with two locations in the Gentilly area. They were chosen for their success and persistence in business pursuits, their history of philanthropy, and their service as role models for the New Orleans community.

At the ceremony, both honorees will lecture on business entrepreneurship and participate in an audience Q&A session. A reception will follow in the atrium of the Professional Schools and Sciences Building.

Champions of the American Dream is an initiative of the Dillard University College of Business designed to recognize local business leaders. The event honors one Dillard alum and one non-alum annually. In 2011, Dillard recognized Beverly McKenna and Larry Lundy at its inaugural Champions ceremony.

Flower and Perrault were nominated by a committee consisting of Dr. Christian Fugar, dean of the College of Business; Dr. Walter Strong, executive vice president; Kemberly Washington, assistant dean for student programs in the College of Business; Ronald V. Burns Sr. of the board of trustees; Troy Baldwin, assistant vice president for development; and Travis Chase, senior officer for advancement services. Interim President James Lyons and the senior cabinet approved the nominations.
