DU Celebrates National Women's History Month By Recognizing Our Own Historical Icons

sheilatlouDr. Sheila Tlou, '77: Former Botswana Minister of Health and current UNAIDS Regional Director for Eastern and Western Africa.

Professor Sheila Tlou is a Botswanan specialist in HIV/AIDS and women's health and a nursing educator. She is noted for her role in radically eliminating the stigma of HIV/AIDS as Minister of Health between 2004 and 2008. In her current role as regional UNAIDS director, she supervises 21 countries.  


cynthia butler-mcintyre

Cynthia Butler-McIntyre, '76:  Butler-McIntyre is an educator who has impacted the lives of countless students over 30 years as a teacher, assistant principal, summer school principal and now a director of human resources for the Jefferson Parish Public School System in Harvey, La. 

She is the immediate past president of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Christopher Columbus Foundation by President Barack Obama. 


Glenda McNealGlenda Goodly McNeal, '82: Featured on the cover the Feb. 2014 issue of Black Enterprise magazine, Glenda McNeal is Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Global Client Group in Merchant Services Americas at the American Express Company, a role she assumed in June 2009. In this newly formed organization, she is responsible for managing the company’s largest and most complex global customer relationships in the retail, oil, airline, lodging, car rental, and online industries.She has led the formation and launch of the group and the transition from a US account focus to an integrated global approach. In this capacity, she leads the company’s efforts in making American Express a more accessible partner, developing and negotiating strategic partnerships, and in growing revenue, market share and profitability across these industries. 

carolynreedomDr. Carolyn Reedom, '70: Dr. Reedom is an adjunct professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a visiting professor at universities across the country. She has been an administrator in high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools. Dr. Reedom owns a consulting firm and is the former assistant superintendent of elementary schools in the Clark County (Nevada) School District, the fifth largest in the nation. In 2008, the district opened Carolyn S. Reedom Elementary School. Her incredible achievements are documented in Hometown Heroes: Real Stories of Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things All Across America.

  • Ruth Simmons, '68: Dr. Simmons was the 18th president of Brown University, the first black president of an Ivy League institution. Simmons was elected Brown's first female president in November 2000. Simmons assumed office in fall of 2001 and retired in 2012. She now teaches in the African American Studies division as a professor at Brown.
