Dillard students Justin Baker ‘21 and Paulina Webber ‘23 became 2020 Coca-Cola UNITED ‘Pay It Forward’ internship winners. The program aims to provide African-American youth with opportunities to celebrate student achievements and further their success.
Normally, the program is a week-long, in-person experience; however, due to COVID-19, students participated virtually. Students received a $1,000 stipend at the end of the program and a lifetime of Coca-Cola Brand Ambassadorship. Selected students engaged with Coca-Cola Company teams to learn more about the organization and how to conduct business most effectively during a two-day fun and informative development session from August 4-5, 2020.
During this internship, students gain experience in a wide range of roles at Coca-Cola including sales, production, marketing, pricing, event planning, packaging, philanthropy, and community relations. “The Coca Cola internship was an incredible experience. Coca Cola opened their arms and made me a part of their family. I am now a Brand Ambassador for life. The scholarship I received from the internship will go towards tuition and books for my last year at Dillard University,” Baker shared. “Being part of the internship opened my eyes to possibilities in advertising, marketing, brand awareness, and general businesses. I feel like a well-rounded student.” Dillard sophomore Paulina Webber shared similar sentiments. “Being named a Coca-Cola Bottling Company Pay It Forward scholar has been a rewarding experience. I am more than grateful for the opportunity! I plan to use the funds to purchase textbooks and pay remaining fees for school,” she said.
One of the main goals of the program is to teach the interns, to put it simply, how to go to work. It exposes them to real-world work situations, including business practices and protocols, how to network, and other pertinent skills that will prepare them for the job market. Over 100 students from Coca-Cola’s partner HBCU Colleges and Universities have participated in the Pay it Forward internship to date.
