Adria Kimbrough, Esq., 2020 New Orleans CityBusiness Women of the Year Award, continues to shatter glass ceilings for herself and Dillard students

Adria Kimbrough, Esq., Dillard University Pre-Law Program advisor

August 24, 2020

Dillard University Pre-Law Program advisor Adria Kimbrough, Esq., is a 2020 New Orleans CityBusiness Women of the Year honoree for her work with preparing students for law school. In the announcement, CityBusiness wrote that the award is based on women from the New Orleans metropolitan whose successes in business and contributions to the community have made them movers and shakers in the region. CityBusiness also is recognizing nonprofit organizations that have gone above and beyond in serving the needs of local women and/or children. “I am deeply honored to be recognized for doing work that I absolutely love and that I truly believe is impactful,” Kimbrough said. “This moment in our nation's history desperately calls for a more diverse legal profession to effectively respond to the injustices of our time. I am energized by the young people I am privileged to work with and I know they will go on to change the world for the better.”

Under Kimbrough’s tutelage, Dillard Pre-Law and its students have accomplished major achievements. Its program is nationally recognized and one of the leading programs in the HBCU consortium. Its Mock Trial Team was founded in 2016 and is a member of the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA); Kimbrough, local attorney Roman Griffith, and Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge, the Honorable Kern Reese, serve as coaches for the Mock Trial team. In 2018, Dillard’s Pre-Law Program was awarded the AccessLex Institute Legal Education Diversity Pipeline Grant, which funds programs that provide students from historically underrepresented groups with resources to aid them in successful matriculation into law school and the legal profession.

Dillard is the only undergraduate institution in the nation, and the only historically Black university in the nation, to be awarded a grant through this program. Dillard also received $125,00 to launch a program called LEAD (Legal Education Advancing Diversity) that provides students and graduates from the three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in New Orleans with a comprehensive year-long program that will include intensive preparation for the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), law school admissions support, and a mentor in the legal profession. Dillard's Mock Trial team is ranked #1 out of 20 teams from much larger institutions such as Baylor University, Louisiana State University, Rice University, Texas A&M University and the University of Houston.

In 2019,  alums Raven Morris ‘19, Chevel Powell ‘19 and Madison Torry ‘19 were examples of the program’s ability to challenge the status quo by creating lanes for future Black female attorneys. These three women received full scholarships to their law school of choice. Morris attends the University of Tennessee College of Law, Powell is enrolled at Washington University School of Law and Torry, Loyola University New Orleans College of Law.
