NEW ORLEANS – Traelon Rodgers ‘21, has been named a valedictorian for the Dillard University class of 2021. Rodgers, along with one other valedictorian will lead their class, composed of 219 students, during the University’s 85th Commencement Exercise on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at 8 a.m. on the Rosa Freeman Keller Avenue of Oaks on the Gentilly campus.
Arlington, Texas native Traelon Rodgers will receive his bachelor’s degree in urban studies and public policy. He intends to use his bachelor's degree to work in government while obtaining his law degree. Rodgers currently serves as a national board member for the NAACP and the assistant secretary for the board. At the age of 21, Rodgers is the youngest person to be elected as a national officer of the NAACP. He serves as the vice-chair of the Elections Supervisory, Membership and Units, and the Legal Committees. He is also a member of Dillard University’s nationally ranked mock trial team and a two-term Student Government Association president at Dillard University. “Traelon came to Dillard as an accomplished student, an emerging activist, raised up by a praying family,” Dr. Walter Kimbrough, president of Dillard University said in a statement. “Dillard was a place for him to take advantage of a number of opportunities that added another layer of texture to his growth and development. He will achieve national prominence.”
Throughout his life, Rodgers had many leadership roles. He served as the vice-chairman
for the City of Dallas Youth Commission, chairman of the NAACP National Youth Work
Committee, and president of the Dallas NAACP Youth Council. Rodgers' proudest moment
serving in the Dallas Youth Council was when leading a district-wide walkout for gun
violence awareness in schools. In the position of chairman of the NYWC, Rodgers created
task forces that addressed social justice issues that impacted youth members in the
NAACP nationwide. “What is remarkable about Traelon is that he was able to maintain a perfect GPA while
also being heavily involved as a campus leader and as a community activist. I think
a lot of people recognize him as Dillard's student government president and know about
his position with the NAACP, but he really doesn't brag enough about all of the activities
he leads as a change agent.” Dr. Casey Schreiber, associate professor of Urban Studies
and Public Policy. “Like when he organized a group of young protesters to take to
the streets in summer 2020 at the height of national attention in solidarity with
the black lives matter movement. He has been able to achieve so many things as an
advocate for others. So, I am happy that he is receiving this recognition as valedictorian
so we can shine the spotlight on his personal accomplishments.”
Rodgers is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. He is a Kappa Fellow and serves as the chairman of intake. Kappa Alpha Psi recently awarded Rodgers as the Undergraduate Brother with the highest grade point average. “Get used to the name Traelon Rodgers. He will be a force in this world. Traelon represents the best of Dillard University,” Dr. Marc Barnes, vice president of the Division of Institutional Advancement said. “It has been a pleasure watching him grow over the past three years.” Rodgers has won several awards throughout his undergraduate career including, the NAACP NYWC Chairman's Award, the City of Dallas Appreciation for Dedication and Rice University Best Attorney Award to name a few. Actor and producer Michael Ealy will serve as Dillard University’s 2021 Commencement speaker.
