Dillard University joins the family, friends, and countless students in mourning the passing of Dr. Barbara L. Murray, a distinguished alumna, former professor, and trailblazer in music education and ministry.
Born on June 25, 1946, in Monroe, Louisiana, Dr. Murray’s love for music was nurtured from a young age, leading her to earn a music scholarship to Dillard University, where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education in 1968. She continued her academic pursuits with two master’s degrees from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and became a dedicated educator, mentor, and spiritual leader.
Her contributions to music and ministry were profound, as she served as a church musician, school educator, and accompanist, touching lives across generations. Dr. Murray also made history as the First African American Elected Chair, Division of Deacon Board of Ordained Ministry – Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church (2000-2004).
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Lawless Memorial Chapel.
