Dillard University proudly hosted a remarkable event on February 7, 2024, as part of the Mardi Gras celebrations, bringing together esteemed Mardi Gras royalty and the university community in a vibrant display of culture and camaraderie. The university’s Kearny Hall was the gathering point for this special occasion, attended by the 2024 King-Elect Melvin Labat, Queen Zulu-Select A. Angel’ique Roche’, and the 2024 Queen of the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale, Dominique Bright-Wheeler, J.D., along with the Zulu Tramps, and Mister and Miss Dillard University, Tyler James Finley and Trinity Monique James.
The highlight of the day was the presentation of proclamations by Dillard University’s President, Rochelle L. Ford, Ph.D., APR, to the visiting royalty, in recognition of their contributions to the cultural vibrancy of Mardi Gras and their role in strengthening community bonds. This gesture underscored the university’s commitment to celebrating and participating in the rich traditions of New Orleans.
King-Elect Melvin Labat expressed his honor in being part of the event, stating, “This is such a great honor to be here at Dillard University. It means a lot for me.” His sentiments were echoed by Queen Zulu-Select A. Angel’ique Roche’, an HCU graduate, who shared her excitement about bringing Mardi Gras to the community and engaging with the students, “As an HCU graduate, I am so excited to be here! I love the fact we are bringing Mardi Gras to the community, and I am so excited to see the students.”
The event also featured the unique opportunity for students and senior citizens attending the monthly Older Adult Lunch and Learn program to engage directly with the visiting royalty. They participated in the tradition of decorating and exchanging official Zulu coconuts, a cherished Mardi Gras custom, fostering a sense of unity and joy among all participants.
