A tenured professor with over 20 years in academia, Dr. Atkinson received her Bachelor of Science in food science and management from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, her M.P.H. in public health nutrition from Tulane University and her Ph.D. in international nutrition from Cornell University.
Dr. Atkinson has worked in private practice as a clinical dietitian in Baltimore, Maryland as well as New Orleans. Her area a specialization is maternal and child nutrition. She is a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN), a licensed dietitian/nutritionist (LDN); and she is a member of both the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Louisiana Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics (LAND) where she served one the board in several capacities including that of president.
Dr. Atkinson has authored three books: "Healthy Living with Hypertension – A guide for African Americans", "The Basics of Diabetes Nutrition Therapy for African Americans" and "The Keys to Healthy living with Chronic diseases for African Americans". Dr. Atkinson is a native of the Caribbean Island of Jamaica, who now calls New Orleans home.
