What Is a Forensic Exam?
A forensic medical examination, sometimes known as a “rape kit,” may happen up to 120 hours (5 days) after a sexual assault. If it is more than five days since the assault, there are still medical and other support services available to you. If you have experienced sexual violence, you may choose to have a sexual assault forensic exam performed as a way to preserve possible DNA evidence and receive important medical care.
Providers will assist you to make choices about your care. If you are 18 years or older you do not have to report to police or press charges to get a forensics/sexual assault exam. After getting a forensic exam, you have up to 30 days to decide whether or not to contact police to press charges.
Forensic nurses are extensively trained in trauma-informed care and evidence collection. The forensic medical examinations may include:
Offering information about legal and medical options
Obtaining a medical history
Providing an STI screening
Providing an STI and pregnancy prevention medications
Initiating HIV nPEP treatment if indicated (only available if within 72 hours of the incident)
Evaluating for injuries and illnesses
Collecting any forensic evidence
Providing a change of clothing, toiletries and a place to shower after the exam
Giving referrals for follow-up care including counseling and medical treatment
