    Dillard Board of Trustees member and alumna Dr. Ruth Simmons discusses being a trailblazer in higher education for African American women. As a child,  Dr. Simmons questioned her mother about her eligibility for college. Not only was she encouraged to attend, she won a scholarship to Dillard University. Dr. Simmons went on to become the first African American to preside over an Ivy League School, when she was head of Brown University.

    Dillard alumnae Dr. Barbara Thompson and Ms. Pearlie Elloie were trailblazers in the 1960s. Both women were part of a lawsuit to force Tulane University to open its doors to African American students. The women were honored for their efforts in a special ceremony held at Dillard University during the MLK Week of Peace in January, 2013.

    Thanks to Dillard Alumni Dr. Lewis Brown and his wife Shamira Brown, a collection of movies and film shorts featuring Louisiana-born black entertainers and other national stars from the early 1900s through the civil rights era could soon be part of a Black History Month film festival tribute in New Orleans.

    Dillard President Dr. Walter Kimbrough has joined the Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Orleans campaign to gain support from local businesses and corporations for the struggling organization. Dr. Kimbrough has been a Big Brother for the past eight years, and understands the importance and the impact the program can have on so many lives.

    Ortique trial center

    Dillard University will host a special session of the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals to hear oral arguments from five cases on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. Dillard University students are invited to learn and see the working mechanisms of the American judicial system in the Justice Revius O. Ortique Jr. Mock Trial Center, in the Professional Studies Building. The event begins at 10 a.m.
